I Went to a friends house on my bike to take a look at his e36 m3 he bought this afternoon. He hadn't even driven it yet. My parents have driven manual and even prefer it to auto, so I had a pretty good idea. So I kind of taught my friend how to drive manual. I did smell a little burning clutch, but at least he knows how to start the car and drive in first and second and reverse. (That car isn't his)

Your friend purchased a Manual M3 without ever having driven a stick before? Ballsy.

Exactly what I was thinking! How could you buy a car that you haven't even driven yet? How would you know if you liked it? How would you know if the car was operating properly?
Hopefully he got a good deal so he can afford to fix any issues that may exist that he couldn't detect since he didn't drive it.

In a way it makes sense, because many people are often reluctant to teach someone the basic on their car because they prefer their clutches stankless. When I got my car, I wasn't a heel-toe master (still not) but I was able to drive around town, though not without shaking my passengers to death with my jerkiness. I actually learned how to drive stick on Xbox, and when I was 13 I made a bet with my dad I learned well enough using it that I could start up and drive his car moderately okay without stalling it. I won the bet and he had to teach me properly in his car as a result.

It's the best way to learn.

Did you just go and test drive different stick shift cars without really knowing how to drive them? Not being a dick, I just see this exact scenario in my future.

No, just had the dude selling it drive me in it. I put it up on the ramps to check it out. I bought it on the spot. Also, my brother just bought his car had no idea how to drive a stick. I drove it for him.

My brother just did the same a few weeks ago.

His dad and his dad's mechanic drove it.

I'm lacking practice with manual, the car that I've had the most experience in was a diesel, and those are easy to get going. All you gotta do is creep with the clutch.

I taught myself to drive a manual because I bought myself a car as a stick in high school (had driven for a couple years in handme downs) and my parents had no clue how to drive anything but autos. I went to the library (this is pre-useful internet) and read articles about it in popular mechanics and read some maintenance manuals. I probably stalled it 40 or 50 times that night. Good times. It took me ~10 minutes to even get it out of the driveway.
Even with all the abuse that clutch got in the first month it lasted another 90k miles.

You are both the kind of people the world needs more of. MTs wouldn't be dying if there were more people like you

I bought my mustang cobra 2 months ago with no manual experience. I had my dad test drive and and had to go on what he said. Seeing the guys spotless garage made it pretty easy to trust that the car was well taken care of though.

Best way to learn is on someone else's M3 so it's their clutch you're burning, haha

Nah, you get a wiff of your own, and you learn never to do what you just did again.

True. And you're a gearhead so you care.
If someone views a car as an appliance they might not pay much attention and repeat mistakes.
